The Claremont and Claremont Place provides affordable apartments for 68 workforce families, located on two parcels which were formerly the site of the Chubby & Tubby hardware store in the Rainier Valley. The hardware store, which had closed many years prior to the project development, was a beloved neighborhood staple for the surrounding community. Care was taken to document the social significance of the Chubby & Tubby store through the State of Washington Historic Inventory process. The store's iconic "arrow" sign was donated for restoration & display at the Museum for History & Industry.
58 apartment units are provided in a five-story, mixed-use building located on Rainier Avenue. 10 low-rise townhomes & flats are located across the alley providing a transition to the adjacent single-family residential neighborhood. Both projects share a large landscaped courtyard, roof terrace and interior community spaces. Parking is provided in a secure below grade garage. Ample commercial store fronts and a corner hardscape plaza on Rainier Avenue South now replace the vacant hardware store, creating a vibrant and active streetscape which will serve to revitalize the neighborhood.
